Organisation Description:
The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.
Summary of the Role:
The successful Post-Doctoral Research Assistant will be working on this 24 partner project aimed at developing Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) and translating it to a fully operational approach for decision makers to deploy.
To do this, it will involve identifying the stakeholder community, and with them, maps of the ecoregions, their species and habitats, stakeholder interests and responsibility. The successful candidate will also be expected to establish ecological and social system priorities under current legislation and regulation, determine major factors influencing these priorities, conduct susceptibility analysis and identify potential management strategies through co-design workshops and systematic reviews.

Educational and Professional Requirements:
- A relevant PhD in a marine ecological analysis, or a related field, with at least two years of relevant post-doctoral work experience.
- Demonstrated experience of working in the arena of fisheries ecology and risk evaluation or similar.
- Demonstrated experience of working in an interdisciplinary science context that focuses on marine ecology and the drivers of change in that context
- Demonstrated skills in data analysis linked to marine ecological/fisheries science
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with, organise and effectively communicate with people ranging from scientists and policy advisors to users of the sea (e.g. fishers) and the wider public.
- High level of experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
- High level statistical analysis skills (ideally implemented in R).
- Proven Scientific Report and peer reviewed paper writing skills.
- Strong and effective organisation and administration skills.
- Good time management and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
- The ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in addition to effective numeracy skills.
- Sea going experience or sufficiently fit to pass an ENG II Medical.
- Full, clean driving license.
