Marine Institute Sets New Standard in Sustainability with ISO 50001 Certification

The Marine Institute has achieved ISO 50001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for energy management systems, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.

Achieved in May 2026, the certification demonstrates the Institute's leadership in energy management and validates a long-standing commitment to improving energy performance across its facilities, laboratories, research vessels, and support services.

As Ireland's national agency for marine research, technology, development and innovation, the Marine Institute plays a vital role in supporting the sustainable management of Ireland's marine resources. Recognising the environmental impact of its operations, the Institute has embedded energy efficiency and responsible resource management into its day-to-day activities and strategic planning.

ISO 50001 provides a globally recognised framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve their energy management systems. The certification reflects the Marine Institute's structured approach to monitoring energy use, identifying opportunities for improvement, and delivering measurable energy performance gains.

The achievement builds on an established programme of energy management that has been in place across the Institute since 2016 and reinforces its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving operational efficiency, and fostering a culture of environmental awareness among staff.

Commenting on the certification, Toni Hollowell, Facilities Manager, Marine Institute said:

This certification recognises those efforts while setting an even higher benchmark for the future."
