Organisation Description:
The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.
Summary of the Role:
The successful candidate will work within a team delivering scientific services relating to ocean health and pollution as a pressure on the marine environment, in support of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH). This work supports the development of measures to protect the marine environment as required by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and OSPAR Convention.

Educational and Professional Requirements:
• A minimum of a certificate (third level) in a relevant Science subject or an equivalent qualification.
• Relevant work experience in an analytical laboratory, ideally with familiarity in the chemical analysis of environmental matrices.
• Demonstrated experience of basic laboratory skills.
• Excellent working knowledge of modern analytical instrumentation.
• Proven scientific & technical report writing skills.
• Willingness to complete both field-based and work at sea on board research vessels and be sufficiently fit to pass an ENG II/Seafarers medical and related training
• Experience in the use of standard Microsoft Office software packages.
• The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• The ability to manage time effectively, work in an organised manner and work to deadlines.
Duration of Contract:
The contract will be issued on a temporary specified purpose basis for a duration up to 31st December 2023, subject to continued funding. Successful candidates will be on probation for the first 6 months of this contract
