Post-Doctoral Research (PDR): Stakeholders in the Ocean Carbon Socio-ecological System

Vacancy Area

Scientific and Technical

Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Team in Fisheries Ecosystem Advisory Services, on delivering the research for the OceanICU project.  This will involve establishing current understanding, perceptions, and needs among relevant industrial (e.g. mining, trawling, drilling, dredging and fishing), eNGO, and management/policy-making stakeholder groups. From these, the role will be to define future scenarios of interest and societal relevance, and provide this knowledge to inform development of decision-support tools. A multi-sectoral, multi-pressure oceanic carbon risk assessment using an adapted ODEMM approach coupled with mental modelling will be carried out to enable identification, and importantly, prioritization of societally-relevant carbon-related impacts and threats, and their impacts on associated ecosystem services.
