Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

The Team Leader will be responsible for building on the capacity existing in the Marine Institute Data Management team to support and develop Institute operational data management services and marine data research activities. The individual will be responsible for coordination of data management practice and policies, including supporting data processes for operational services including research vessels, sensor networks, oceanographic modelling, fisheries ecosystem, marine environmental and food safety programmes; supporting the delivery of online data services e.g. the Marine Institute’s Data Catalogue (https://data.marine.ie), the Irish Spatial Data Exchange (www.isde.ie),  online data access (http://erddap.marine.ie) and spatial data services e.g. for Ireland’s Marine Atlas (https://atlas.marine.ie); leading data initiatives within the Institute and at a national level, and participating in new national and international R&D projects to develop marine data management and data analytic capabilities.  This role will support the development of data and IT strategy within the Institute, and help to drive the development of new capabilities to position the Institute for a digital future.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • A degree in computer science, data analytics, or a relevant scientific or numerical discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of implementation projects using enterprise database management solutions e.g. MS SQL Server or alternative.
  • Experience of data analytics such as developing data visualisation, reporting or dashboards
  • Experience of working with a defined Data or Software process.
  • Some experience of working with a formal project management process.
  • Some experience of leading other team members.
  • Proven collaboration skills including team working, working with distributed project teams and professional network development.
  • Some experience in the following Customer support and problem management Business analysis and requirements gathering
  • The ability to work unsupervised with demonstrated ability to use initiative.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally at all levels.

Duration of Contract:

An employment contract of Indefinite Duration will issue for this role at the discretion of the Marine Institute subject to satisfactory performance at the required level and completion of the required probation period. The successful candidate will be on probation for the first six months.
