Summary of the Role:

The Scientific Technical Officer (STO) will work closely with the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Principal Investigator and the Inshore Fisheries Team Leader on delivering the research for the CINEA MPA project. Their key role will be in the prediction of the effects of fishing on species and habitats. 

Among the duties and responsibilities, include:

The role may involve:

  • Developing the information needed on existing MPAs in Ireland;
  • Carrying out an analysis of fishing data within and beyond the MPAs and in any changes in that as a result of the MPA being set up;
  • Carry out interviews etc., with stakeholders perceptions of MPAs;
  • Help develop a conceptual model of the effects of MPAs on the reallocation of fishing;
  • Help with the synthesis of the project findings and with the management of the project;
  • Help manage the Work Package where MI is responsible (Conceptual modelling), and collaborate on other project work as appropriate;
  • Present the work at local, national and international meetings, including project meetings;
  • Participate in and/or lead Research Surveys on commercial and research survey vessels at sea as required;
  • Carry out any other duties assigned from time to time, appropriate to the position.

Educational and Professional Requirements

  • A relevant degree in marine ecological science, or a related field
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with, organise and effectively communicate with people ranging from scientists and policy advisors to users of the sea (e.g. fishers) and the wider public. 
  • High level of experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications. 
  • High level statistical analysis skills (ideally implemented in R).
  • High level spatial analysis skills in R or using GIS platforms
  • Proven scientific report or peer reviewed paper writing skills. 
  • Strong and effective organisation and administration skills.
  • Good time management and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in addition to effective numeracy skills.
  • Sea going experience or sufficiently fit to pass an ENG II Medical.
  • Full, clean driving license.
