Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

The finance team is responsible for the budgetary and financial management of the Institute’s funds which include value for money, compliance with financial procedures, strong corporate governance and the safeguarding of the Institute’s assets to support the goals of the Marine Institute. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and supporting a range of Finance activities such as managing the fixed asset process in line with the fixed asset policy in the Institute and ensuring the fixed asset register is updated and maintained monthly including additions and disposals and reporting on infrastructure investment KPI’s, organizing and coordinating regular stock takes and updating of the register thereafter and posting of year end depreciation journals and other activities relevant to the finance team.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • Third level qualification in a Finance or relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 18 months of relevant work experience in a finance office
  • Knowledge of public sector procurement rules.
  • Demonstrated experience of working in roles that require working on own initiative
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of working in roles that include ensuring compliance with good governance practice and compliance practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing for audits, supporting audits and in liaising with auditors.
  • Effective Communication skills both written and verbal as well as the ability to present with clear messaging to a wide range of audiences.
  • Knowledge of relevant tax regulations applicable including VAT, PSWT, RCT and tax clearance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of a financial accounting/ERP system and reporting software. The Institute use Microsoft Dynamics Nav and Bix Analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of standard MS Office software packages to include the use of Excel, Word and PowerPoint to a high standard of expertise.
